LONG BEACH, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 92-60 loss to UC Riverside in the first round of the Big West Tournament Tuesday evening at the Walter Pyramid.
Sophomore Andee Ritter led the 'Eaters with 20 points as she was 5-of-10 from 3-point range. Senior Irene Chavez added 13 points and four rebounds, while classmate Brittany Glassow finished with six points and six boards. Freshman Brooke Bayman and junior Teirra Hicks chipped in six points each.
It was the final game for UC Irvine's five seniors - Chavez, Glassow, Mckenzie Piper, Shereen Sutherland and Chloe Kellum.
"I was just in the locker room thanking our seniors," head coach Tamara Inoue said in a postgame press conference. "To have a new coach come in, who you didn't necessarily choose to play for, is tough, so for them to allow me and my staff to come in here and change things up, and really buy into what we're doing means a lot to me."
UCI (5-26) ended up shooting just 34.5 percent from the floor, compared to 51.5 percent for the Highlanders. The Anteaters were also outrebounded, 42-31.
UC Irvine got out to a quick start, scoring the first eight points before going up, 12-2, on Ritter's third triple at the 6:13 mark. UC Riverside then came storming back with 14 unanswered to pull ahead, 16-12, with 1:48 remaining. Sutherland would end a five-minute scoring drought for the 'Eaters with a layup, but the Highlanders stayed out front and held a 22-16 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
It went back-and-forth early in the second period until a three from Glassow made it a four-point game (26-22) with 8:34 to play. The Anteaters kept within striking distance and trailed 33-29 following a pair of Chavez free throws before UCR closed out the half on a 13-4 run to increase its cushion to 46-33 at the break.
UCI quickly closed the gap to nine at 48-39 after consecutive buckets by Piper and Bayman to start the third frame. UCR then got on the board and the two teams traded points until the Highlanders outscored the 'Eaters, 19-5, over the final seven minutes to open up a 69-46 lead.
UC Riverside (16-14) continued to control the pace in the fourth as it ran away with the 92-60 victory.
Simone DeCoud led the Highlanders with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. Michelle Curry and Lauren Holt also finished with 20 points each, while Holt added 10 boards.
