FULLERTON, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's track & field team continued to post top performances early in the outdoor season as they won six events at the Ben Brown Invitational at Titan Track Complex.
In her second-straight outing, sophomore Barbara Coward broke her own school record and the meet record in the discus. Coward, who already ranked first in all of NCAA Division I this year at 177-10, went for 180-08 on her fourth and final throw to win the event. She was over nine feet better than the runner-up and became the first 'Eater to ever reach the 180-foot mark.
On the track, UCI swept the relay events as sophomore Hope Bushnell, senior Megan George, sophomore Brandy Coward and junior Persis William-Mensah combined to win the 4x100 in a Big West-leading 45.85 seconds. George and William-Mensah are returnees from last year's conference champion team that set the school record at 44.51.
Brandy Coward, junior Simone Buchanan, and seniors Crystal Lizaola and Saniya Syed, won the 4x400 by over three seconds. The quartet crossed the finish line in 3:46.78.
Lizaola added an individual victory in the 400m hurdles with the 10th-fastest time in school history. She clocked in at a personal-best 60.97, finishing 1.39 seconds ahead of teammate Tyra Jones, who was second at 62.36.
William-Mensah also finished ahead of the pack in the 200m at 24.33 seconds, while Bushnell was third (25.03).
Junior Tyra Jones placed fourth in the 100m hurdles with a lifetime-best 13.96 seconds, moving her into a tie for sixth all-time at UC Irvine. Brandy Coward (12.28) and Syed (59.53) added top-20 showings in the 100m and 400m, respectively.
Freshman Brenda Dorantes led six Anteaters in the mile as she came in seventh overall (5:08.60).
In the shot put, sophomore Elizabeth Akindele was third with a personal-record 45-09.50. Akindele remained at No. 4 in program history as she topped her previous best of 45-04.25. Senior Melanie Speech was also seventh overall at 41-08.
Senior Ariel Cheng took third in the pole vault, clearing a season-best 12-02.75.
On Friday, senior Aliya Shah won the steeplechase in a lifetime-best 11:07.42. She was followed by freshman Anastasia Karnaze, who claimed runner-up honors with a time of 11:11.54. Their marks rank fifth and sixth in school history, respectively.
In yesterday's field events, Melanie Speech had a fourth-place showing in the javelin. She recorded her best mark of the day on her first attempt at 130-11.
Junior Dazhana Bauer-Jackson took fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 172-00, while Barbara Coward added a sixth-place finish (168-04). Junior Alison Meegan and freshman Brianna Villanueva also notched personal bests of 144-07 and 134-07, respectively.
UC Irvine will make its home debut next weekend when it hosts the UCI Spring Collegiate Classic, March 17-18.
