No. 6 UC Irvine Burned By No. 5 Arizona State, 12-7

IRVINE, Calif. – No. 5 Arizona State exploded for six goals in the third period to put away No. 6 UC Irvine, 12-7 in the fifth place game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at the Anteater Aquatics Center.

Senior Kelsey Thornton led UCI with two goals. Mackenzie Milham, Julie Swieca, Natalie Seidemann, McKenna Mitchell and Mary Brooks each added a goal for the Anteaters.

Kelsey Thornton started the scoring with a goal at 5:13. ASU would score the next two to take a 2-1 lead after the first eight minutes.

Following another Thornton goal at 5:01, McKenna Mitchell scored down low on a pass from McKenzie Milham at 1:24. Thornton stole the ball, drove down the pool and found Mary Brooks on the left side where she buried the ball in the back of the net to tie the score at 4-4.

ASU took control of the third period, scoring three unanswered and six total goals to open a 10-6 advantage. Milham bounced one off the keeper at 4:19 and Julie Swieca scored with 11 seconds to go for UCI.

Natalie Seidemann had a backhand at 2:59 in the fourth quarter to end the Anteater scoring as Arizona State went on to the 12-7 victory.

The Anteaters will travel to the Michigan Wolverine Invitational next weekend (Mar. 4-5), taking on Hartwick in their first game.
