Kekauoha; Akpakpa Shine In UC Irvine's Sweep Of Cal State Fullerton

Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – Idara Akpakpa and Harlee Kekauoha had standout performances as UC Irvine beat Cal State Fullerton 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-10) at the Bren Events Center Saturday.

UCI records back-to-back sweeps and improves to 21-4 overall and 9-3 in the Big West. The 21 wins are tied for third most in program history and the most since UCI went 22-8 in 2009.

Akpakpa led UCI with 11 kills, hitting .733 without an error in 15 attempts.  The middle blocker also added three block assists.

Kekauoha tied her career-high with five aces. The opposite, who leads the Big West and ranks 16th nationally, moved in to sixth all-time at UCI with 117 in her career. She also added nine kills.

Outside hitter Haley DeSales recorded nine kills, eight digs and three block assists. Libero Luna Tsujimoto had a match-high 17 digs, while setter Ali Koumelis totaled 39 set assists, seven digs and led the Anteaters to a .286 hitting percentage. Middle blocker Makayla Wolfe had six kills and outside hitter Brianna Montgomery added four kills and four digs.

Cal State Fullerton (5-20, 1-10) hit .046 (19-15-87) and were led by Madeline Schnieder with eight kills and 10 digs.

The Anteaters held an 8-0 ace advantage and tied the Titans in blocks with five each.

In the first set, Cal State Fullerton got out to an early 4-1 lead, but UCI quickly turned it around, moving in front 9-5. The Anteaters would roll to a 25-12 victory behind the strength of five aces.

UCI created some separation in the second set on three consecutive kills by Makayla Wolfe and a ball handling error by the Titans, 14-9. The Anteaters had a 4-0 spurt, which included an ace by Harlee Kekauoha to extend the lead to 19-14. A kill by Kekauoha gave UCI the 25-19 win.

A pair of Idara Akpakpa kills helped UCI to a 9-3 advantage in the third set. Kekauoha would serve the last six points in UCI's 25-10 win.

UCI will hit the road next week, traveling to UC Santa Barbara Friday (Nov. 10) at 7:00 p.m. and Cal Poly Saturday (Nov. 11) at 2:00 p.m.
