UC Irvine Falls In Three To No. 22 Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – UC Irvine was swept by No. 22 Cal Poly (25-11, 25-20, 25-16) in a Saturday afternoon match at the Mott Athletics Complex.
The Anteaters drop their second consecutive match and go to 21-6 on the year and 9-5 in the Big West. The Mustangs claim the 2017 Big West regular season title as they improve to 24-2 overall and 14-0 in the Big West.
UCI struggled offensively, hitting just .172 (35-20-87) and did not record a service ace. In comparison, Cal Poly hit .373 (36-8-75) and had eight aces. The teams were even in blocks with six each.
Outside hitter Haley DeSales led the team with 11 kills and nine digs, while middle blocker Makayla Wolfe had 10 kills and four total blocks. 13 Anteaters saw action against the Mustangs.
Torrey Van Winden did not commit an error and lead Cal Poly with 13 kills. Taylor Nelson had 27 set assists, two aces and seven digs.
Cal Poly started quickly, scoring the first three points of the first set. The Mustangs scored four straight to open an 18-9 lead on the way to taking the set 25-11.
Three consecutive kills by Haley DeSales moved UCI in front 17-13 in the second set. The Mustangs would go on to out-score the Anteaters 12-3 to win the set 25-20. Cal Poly scored the final six points of the set.
Cal Poly took control of the final set with a 4-0 run, which included two service aces, 11-6. Four more unanswered points extended the gap to 17-9. Cal Poly ended the match on a kill by Savannah Nieman, 25-16. The Anteaters hit .042 (8-7-24) in the final stanza.
UCI returns home to host Hawaii next Saturday (Nov. 18) for an 8:00 p.m. match.
