IRVINE, CALIF. – UC Irvine rallied, but could not overcome Long Beach State in the fourth period as the Forty-Niners won 8-7 in a Golden Coast Conference game at the Anteater Aquatics Center.
After Long Beach State led 7-5 at the end of the third period, Jacob Fujioka's goal with 4:56 in the fourth quarter ended up being the difference as UCI scored twice, once by
Robby Stiefel (4:36) and then by
Lovre Milos at 0:55. An exclusion on Long Beach's final possession gave the Forty-Niners a reset and they were able to run out the clock for the win.
After UCI tied the game at 2-2 with a goal by Milos at 4:56 in the second quarter, Long Beach never trailed again, scoring three goals in the period.
Milos led UCI with three goals on the night followed by
Kyle Trush with two. Along with Stiefel,
Fynn Schuetze also added a goal. Matejic Matijevic recorded 17 saves in goal.
Long Beach State was led by Austin Stewart with three goals, while Thomas Freeman had eight saves.
With the win, Long Beach State (14-11, 3-2) secures the second seed for the upcoming Golden Coast Championship due to a tiebreaker with UCI (13-9, 3-2) taking the third seed. Pacific tops the conference and owns the No. 1 seed.
While it was senior night, it won't be the last time the Anteaters play at home as the GCC Championship will be hosted at the Anteater Aquatic Center next Friday-Sunday (Nov. 17-19).
