IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine and Long Beach State played out another chapter of the Black and Blue Rivalry Series Thursday night in Anteater Stadium, and it was a true clash of titans in a physical match that yielded no goals in a 0-0 stalemate.
UC Irvine (7-3-4, 2-0-1) took hold of the first half outshooting Long Beach State (7-3-2, 1-0-1) 8-4 and having the better chances and all four of the shots on target. On two occasions, UCI nearly broke the tie hitting the woodwork.
Kiana Palacios had a golden opportunity in the 31st minute, but her breakaway try was turned away. The rebound fell to
Grayson Galbraith about 35 yards away, and her curling strike careened off the far post and out. The second postal moment came in the 43rd minute as
Sydney Carr was set up along the left wing, and her shot toward the far post hit it and stayed out keeping the squads even at the half, 0-0.
LBSU hit back in the second half with 10 shots to the 'Eaters' five testing
Maddie Newsom twice having her make a save. The golden opportunity in this half, however, was again for the Anteaters in the 57th minute.
Sydney Carr found space along the right wing and swung a cross in perfectly to
Shelby Lee whose header came in a little hot and knocked off the crossbar. The rebound fell right to Palacios from the same spot, but her volley had a little too much juice and went up and over the bar leaving the match scoreless still and heading to overtime.
The 'Eaters again found their old friend the post in the first period of overtime.
Reema Bzeih's corner found
Aleah Kelley on the far post who headed a ball back across goal. Palacios came up with the ball again and hit her contested shot off the right post and out. The 49ers had a dangerous chance near the end of the period as well, but Makayla Soll's shot drifted wide of the far post in the 99th minute, and the match playing on into double overtime.
The field position game played out in the second overtime with little in terms of scoring opportunities. The only chance came from
Sydney Carr once again in the 104th minute. Her dribble drive from out in the midfield took her to the edge of the box, but her short-side shot directed right at 49er keeper Mia Hummel who sent it back with her knee ultimately completing the 0-0 draw for the squads.
UCI came away with the advantage in shots, 18-16, and corners, 9-3, while turning five shots on frame to LBSU's two. Newsom and Hummel each picked up the shutout on the evening. For Newsom its her sixth, personally, and eighth altogether for the team. Hummel now has three as part of the seven from Long Beach State.
Sydney Carr's seven shots led all players while
Grayson Galbraith and LBSU's Katie Pingel each had a pair of shots on target.
Each squad picks up an always-important point from the contest giving UCI seven through three matches and LBSUÂ four through two matches as each squad is looking up at UC Riverside at the top of the table who has secured a win in all three Big West contests.
The week continues on with a road match on Sunday. UC Irvine and Hawai'i faceoff at 8:00 p.m. Pacific time with more Big West points on the line.
