IRVINE, Calif. -- Participants of the UC Irvine Invitational participated in A Salute To Service honoring military personnel Sunday at the Santa Ana Country Club.
During the practice round, players participated in a College Am pairing with members of the club. Veterans from UCI's Veteran Services Center, along with UCI's Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs Dr. Thomas Parham also took part in the event.
"Irrespective of our own views about regional or global conflicts, there is no debate about UC Irvine's support for our military Veterans," Parham said. "The very freedoms we enjoy as a nation and as American people is made possible through the sacrifices of our men and women in the Armed Forces. UC Irvine is proud to support our Veterans as they navigate the pathways to productivity and success in their academic endeavors."
American flags were on every hole and all participants received a camouflage UCI hat. Names of veterans were also honored on the carts.
The inspiration for the Salute came from head coach Julie Brooks' experience at last year's NCAA Championship. Brooks, who is a member of the NCAA Championship committee, was touched by the NCAAs involvement with military at the final tournament.
"While our Salute may not be as elaborated as the championship was, I thought it was important," Brooks said. "Not every team plays at the NCAAs, so it's a chance for more players to participate in honoring our military. I'd love for this to catch on to more tournaments."
