Heim, who came in at No. 114 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, was dominant in his first match of the 2017-18 campaign as he dispatched Northern Arizona's Ruben Montano, 6-1, 6-3.
The Speyer, Germany, native continues play on Tuesday where he is set to face 75th-ranked Logan Staggs of UCLA in the Round of 64.
Â
"Sebastian got off to a quick start," UC Irvine head coach
Mike Saunders said. "It was a little windy so he kept his game plan simple and focused on footwork, first serve percentage and controlling the points with his forehand and depth."
Â
Heim also teamed up with junior
Luis Lopez in qualifying doubles, but the pair dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Baylor's Sven Lah and Roy Smith.
Â
"Luis and Sebastian struggled today against a Baylor team that came out hot and played aggressive throughout the match," Saunders said. "It just wasn't their day."
Heim resumes singles play in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, Oct. 3. He will need to win two matches to qualify for the main draw which begins on Thursday, Oct. 5.
