David Kim Leads 'Eaters on First Day of Nick Watney Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. - Senior David Kim paced the UC Irvine men's golf team on the first day of the Nick Watney Invitational at Sunnyside Golf Course as he finished among the top-10 through 36 holes.
 
Kim, the reigning Big West Men's Golfer of the Year, concluded Monday's action in seventh place at even-par 142. He got off to a hot start with five birdies en route to a 4-under 67 to find himself in second place after the opening round, but then dropped five spots with a 75 (+4) in the second.
 
Kim enters Tuesday's final round just five strokes behind the individual leader, Peter Kuest of BYU.
 
Senior Ryan O'Connor, who made a 10-stroke improvement in the second round where he fired a 1-under 70, is 44th (150), while classmate Jonathan Young is 56th at 152 (78-74). Sophomore Jonathan Kang (157) and junior Ramiz Jamal (158) round out the group in 81st and 83rd, respectively.
 
The Anteaters are tied for 11th with a two-round score of 599. Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's, Utah and BYU lead the 16-team field at 576 (+8).
 
UC Irvine wraps up the Nick Watney Invitational with the third and final round on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Players will tee off from holes No. 1 and No. 10 every 10 minutes starting at 8 a.m.
