MALIBU, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's tennis team picked up six singles and two doubles victories on the first day of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships Thursday at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
 
The 'Eaters were impressive in the Round of 128 where they won six of their seven matches. Senior Luca Marquard made quick work of Grand Canyon's Freddie Grant, 6-2, 6-0, while classmate Mason Hansen dispatched Matias Sborowitz of Pepperdine, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
 
Freshman Antoine Barthe picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nick Mitchell of San Diego State in his first collegiate match. Junior Sasha Krasnov came from behind to top Valentin Ianq (GCU), 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2, and junior Luis Lopez outlasted Cal Poly's Antoine Noel, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-1. Junior Vatsal Bajpai also advanced by way of a withdraw.
 
UCI wasn't as fortunate in the Round of 64 with senior Sebastian Heim, Marquard, Hansen, Barthe, Krasnov, Lopez and Bajpai all coming up short in their respective matches. Five of those losses came to Pac-12 opponents, including two who were ranked.
 
In doubles, Heim and Lopez looked strong as the Anteater duo moved on to tomorrow's Round of 16 with an 8-2 victory over Felix Albert/Fabian Woehrl (Hawai'i).
 
Bajpai and Krasnov went 1-1, defeating San Diego State's David Hough/Jan Kirchhoff, 8-2, before coming up short to Max Cressy/Keegan Smith of UCLA in the Round of 32.
 
UC Irvine continues action at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Friday, Oct. 20.
