WALNUT CREEK, Calif. --- UC Irvine took control in the middle quarters en route to a 10-6 victory over Santa Clara at the Mountain Pacific Invitational in Walnut Creek Sunday.
The Anteaters (7-5) broke away from a 1-1 tie at the end of the first quarter to outscore the Broncos, 8-2, in the second and third periods to take a 9-3 lead.
Freshman Bryant Joudrie led UCI for the second straight game with three goals while Ryan Warde, Jon Polos and Ian Fleenor added two each.
Junior goalie Matej Matijevic registered 18 saves.
Warde tied the game at 2-2 with 5:59 left in the second quarter, then Polos scored once and Fleenor twice to give the 'Eaters a 5-2 halftime lead.
Joudrie scored twice early in the third quarter with Thomas Vandiver and Polos adding one goal each to boost the margin to 9-3 entering the final period.
Six players scored one goal apiece for Santa Clara (5-7).
UCI returns to action Saturday with a non-conference game at UCLA at 12:00 p.m.
