WALNUT CREEK, Calif. --- Sophomore Jack Trush scored a career-high five goals, but UC Irvine couldn't hold off Pomona-Pitzer as the Sagehens edged the 'Eaters, 8-7, in overtime at the Mountain Pacific Invitational Saturday morning.
Trush scored with 52 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 7-7, but a goal by Pomona-Pitzer's Jacob Niskey with eight seconds remaining in the first overtime session stood up for the win.
Neither team led by more than one goal in the back-and-forth game.
UCI's last lead was 5-4 on a goal by Trush with 5:01 left in the third quarter.
The Sagehens tied the game 20 seconds later and took the lead at 6-5 on a score by Joseph Schafer with 50 seconds remaining in the third. Trush then tied the game at 6-6 on a goal with 18 ticks left in the quarter.
Tommy Turner's goal with 7:08 remaining in the fourth quarter put Pomona-Pitzer up 7-6 before Trush tied the game once again late in the period to send the contest into overtime.
Matej Matijevic registered 18 saves in goal for the 'Eaters (5-5), who face San Jose State at 1:45 p.m. today.
