WALNUT CREEK, Calif. --- UC Irvine built an early 3-1 lead, but Pepperdine scored the next five goals and went on to defeat the Anteaters, 12-6, in the Mountain Pacific Invitational at Northgate High School Friday.
An early goal by freshman Jon Polos and two from junior Ryan Warde gave UCI a 3-1 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Waves scored three straight to go up 4-3 at the end of the first period.
Pepperdine extended the margin to 6-3 before UCI freshman Foster Hoose scored with 2:51 left in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 6-4, but the Waves added one more score in the period to take a 7-4 halftime lead.
The teams each scored one goal in the third quarter, with the Anteaters' score coming from freshman Ian Fleenor.
Freshman Bryant Joudrie closed out UCI's scoring in the fourth quarter and the Waves added four more goals.
Mark Urban and George Mooney scored three goals apiece for 10th-ranked Pepperdine (8-1).
Eighth-ranked UCI (5-4) faces Pomona-Pitzer Saturday morning at 8:00 at Northgate High in Walnut Creek. The Anteaters will play another game at that site later Saturday afternoon.
