Matej Matijevic Earns GCC Player of Week Honor

 

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine junior goalie Matej Matijevic has been named the Golden Coast Conference Player of the Week, the Anteaters' first honoree in the school's inaugural year in the league.

Matijevic had 43 saves in three games last weekend, including tying his season high with 18 in Sunday's 8-4 win over Whittier College at the Inland Empire Classic in La Verne.

The transfer from San Jose State had 12 stops in a 9-7 victory over Pomona-Pitzer at the Inland Empire Classic and 13 in Saturday's 10-5 loss at No. 5 Stanford.

Matijevic has 72 saves through the season's first five games for an average of 14.40 per game.

Eighth-ranked UCI opens its 2016 home schedule Thursday night hosting Concordia University in a non-conference game at 7:00 at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Other Golden Coast Conference members in the league's first year of men's water polo are Long Beach State, Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara, Pacific and San Jose State.
