STANFORD, Calif. --- Eighth-ranked UC Irvine played No. 5 Stanford virtually even for three quarters before the Cardinal pulled away in the fourth period to register a 10-5, non-conference win at Avery Aquatic Center Saturday.
The Anteaters (1-2) trailed just 4-3 at halftime and 5-3 after three quarters before Stanford outscored UCI, 5-2, in the final period to secure the win.
Jack Trush and Ian Fleenor scored goals for the 'Eaters in the opening quarter and Jon Polos added a score in the second.
Stanford, after holding the 4-3 lead at intermission, scored the next four goals to take an 8-3 lead with 4:38 left in the game.
Polos scored his second goal of the contest with 4:20 remaining in the fourth quarter and Thomas Vandiver added UCI's final score with 2:14 left.
Junior goalie Matej Matijevic recorded 13 saves, giving him 42 over the season's first three games.
Four players scored two goals apiece for the Cardinal (5-0) and Oliver Lewis had 10 saves in goal.
UCI competes in the Inland Empire Classic at La Verne Sunday, facing Pomona-Pitzer at 12:00 p.m. and Whittier College at 3:00 p.m.
