Former UCI Golfer Garrett Sapp Wins Long Beach Open

LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Former UC Irvine golfer Garrett Sapp won the title of the Long Beach Open Sunday, earning the championship after a one-hole playoff.

Sapp fired a 7-under par 65 in the final round at El Dorado Park Golf Course to finish with a four-round total of 18-under 270 (66-70-69-65) with play also conducted at Skylinks Golf Course.  He defeated David Gazzolo and Sam Saunders in the playoff that began and ended on the par-5 18th hole at El Dorado Park.  Sapp recorded a birdie, Gazzolo a par and Saunders a bogey.

Sapp, who played at UCI for two years (2004-06), received the winner's check of $31,000.

He was an All-Big West Conference first-team selection both of his seasons at UCI.  Sapp competed individually in the 2005 NCAA West Regional at the Stanford University Golf Course.

In his two seasons with the 'Eaters, he registered eight top-10 finishes and five top-20 showings.
