Indian Wells, Calif. – Fourth seeded UC Irvine ended up on top outmaneuvering the fifth seed, UC Riverside, 4-0.
The Anteaters made quick work of doubles as No. 3 Caryl Hernandez and Nico Mertens defeated Hans Baumstark and Kyle McCann, 6-0. Jonathan Hammel and Tyler Pham secured the doubles point with a 6-1 victory over Jack Felich and Julian Ruffin at flight two leaving the top spot unfinished.
Heading into singles with a lead, Hammel swept all games at the No. 6 spot 6-0, 6-0 putting the 'Eaters up 2-0. No. 2 in the lineup Luca Marquard came out on top for the third point 6-4, 6-3 over Sean Yun. Mertens finished it out for the Anteaters winning a tie-breaker in the first set followed up by a quick second set, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.
UC Irvine advances to the Semifinal to face top seeded UC Santa Barbara on Thursday (April 28) at 3:00 p.m. at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
