Box Score Northridge, Calif. -- Freshman Tayla Jackson recorded a career-high in UC Irvine's 62-48 loss at CSUN Saturday at the Matadome.
The Anteaters, who had seven players medically cleared to compete, were led by freshman Tayla Jackson who poured in a career-high 17 points. The forward went 8-14 from the floor and recorded four rebounds in 34 minutes of action. Guard Irene Chavez played all 40 minutes and recorded 12 points and three steals. Forward Shereen Sutherland had nine points and five rebounds, while forward Brittany Glassow added four points and five rebounds and forward Chloe Kellum had three points and three rebounds. Jenny Dee recorded two points and Arianna Knox had one point to round out the scoring.
CSUN was led by Serafina Maulupe's 18 points, knocking down 5-11 from three-point range. Emily Cole (14 pt, 10 reb) and Channon Fluker (10 pt, 13 reb) each recorded double-doubles.
CSUN would score eight unanswered to open a 14-6 lead at 1:25 of the first quarter. Irene Chavez would hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the period with CSUN holding a 24-11 lead.
CSUN would score the first 15 points of the second period to extend the lead to 24-11. UCI would score its first point of the period on a Tayla Jackson free throw at 2:54 (31-12). Jackson would score five of UCI's seven points in the quarter as CSUN led 33-19 after 20 minutes.
CSUN's Serafina Maulupe and Emily Cole would combined for all 11 points in a 11-2 run to start the second half as the Matadors would build a 44-20 lead at 6:39. UCI would rally on a 13-5 spurt to end the period trailing 49-33.
UCI won the final stanza, out-scoring the Matadors 15-13, and out-scored CSUN 30-29 in the second half, but were unable to overcome the first half deficit.
UCI falls to 4-21 overall and 1-10 in the Big West. CSUN goes to 6-18 on the year and 4-6 in league action.
UCI will be back in action next Saturday (Feb. 20) hosting Cal State Fullerton at the Bren Events Center beginning at 2:00 p.m. Saturday will be the Think Pink game as well as National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
