UC Irvine Suffers 80-62 Loss To UC Santa Barbara

Irvine, Calif. – UC Irvine suffered a 80-62 loss to UC Santa Barbara Thursday night at the Bren Events Center.

UC Irvine (4-20, 1-9) were led by senior forward Mokun Fajemisin with 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Freshman forward Arianna Knox came off the bench and poured in a career-high 10 points in nine minutes of action. Guard Irene Chavez and forward Mckenzie Piper each had nine points.

Onome Jemerigbe had a game-high 20 points for UCSB (9-15, 6-4), going 7-9 from the floor and 6-7 from the line. She also added four assists and four steals. Coco Miller hit two three-pointers and finished with 17 points. Je Zhe Newton shot 7-11 from the field and ended the night with 16 points and game-high seven rebounds. The Guachos shot 54 percent (31-57) from the field and 84 percent (16-19) from the line.

UC Santa Barbara scored the first eight points of the game until Raelyn Cheung-Sutton hit a three-pointer at 7:16. Eight first period turnovers hurt UCI as the Gauchos would shoot 47.1 percent (8-17) and lead 17-10 at the first break.

Mokun Fajemisin would score the first basket of the quarter, but UCI would only manage two free throws until Irene Chavez hit a three-pointer at 3:12 as UCSB had opened up a 33-17 advantage.

The Anteaters would get within 12 five times in the third quarter, including 60-48 on a pair of free throws by Mckenzie Piper with 20 seconds on the clock. UCSB would answer on a layup by Coco Miller to end the period 62-48.

UCI would not score a basket until Arianna Knox hit a basket at 7:10 (74-50). Knox would score 10 of UCI's 14 points in the final period.

The Anteaters will travel to CSUN Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. game at the Matadome.
