SPOKANE, Wash. - The UC Irvine women's basketball team struggled against the height of Gonzaga as the 'Eaters dropped a 102-38 decision in front of 5,186 fans Sunday afternoon at McCarthey Athletic Center.
UCI was unable to find its rhythm against a roster that featured six players over 6-foot tall. The Anteaters were held to 20 percent shooting and were outrebounded, 55-28. The 'Zags also got hot from behind the arc where they were 15-for-36 (42 percent).
UC Irvine (0-2) was led by junior Teirra Hicks, who finished with nine points. Senior Shereen Sutherland added eight points, while freshman Brooke Bayman had seven. Sophomore Andee Ritter and senior Mckenzie Piper tied for the team lead with five rebounds each. Ritter added three steals as UCI forced 13 turnovers.
The 'Eaters got on the board first with a Sutherland jumper at the 9:38 mark. Gonzaga then proceeded to score the next 11 points. Sutherland came back with a layup, but the 'Zags went on a 14-0 run to close out the quarter with a 25-4 lead.
The Bulldogs extended their advantage to 26 before a layup from Bayman ended UCI's seven-minute scoring drought. The home team kept the momentum, however, as it took a 50-18 lead into the locker room.
Gonzaga (2-0) continued to roll in the second half, running away with the 102-38 victory.
Makenlee Williams made six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points for the 'Zags. Zykera Rice added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs were picked as the favorites to win the West Coast Conference and were also receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches' Poll.
UC Irvine returns to the hardwood on Thursday, Nov. 17, when it continues its seven-game road stretch at Utah State.
