SAN DIEGO, Calif. – UC Irvine freshman Moritz Geis highlighted the second day of action at the SDSU Fall Invitational with a pair of Flight 1 singles wins Saturday at Aztec Tennis Center.
Geis opened with a big victory over 12th-ranked USC's Henry Ji. The Hessen, Germany, native came back from a one-set deficit to defeat Ji, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. Geis then advanced to tomorrow's semifinal with a 7-5, 7-6 triumph over Oliver Landert of Florida Gulf Coast.
Junior Luca Marquard picked up a straight-set win against Pratt Keerasuntonpong of No. 29 San Diego (6-2, 6-4), before falling to FGCU's Ezequiel Cerrini, 6-4, 7-6 (10), in the quarterfinals.
In Flight 2, sophomore Mason Hansen topped San Diego State's Nick Mitchell, 6-3, 7-6 (1), but then suffered a 6-1, 6-1 semifinal loss to Reid Ponder. Freshman Bruce Man-Son-Hing (3-6, 6-2, 11-9) and junior Andrew Gong (6-1, 6-2) both came up short in their quarterfinal matches.
In doubles action, Marquard and sophomore Luis Lopez advanced to tomorrow's Flight 1 consolation final by dispatching Ponder/Rapp, 8-3.
Geis, who was paired with Grand Canyon's Mathieu Ounanian in Flight 2 doubles, lost in the consolation final, 8-5, to De La Torre/Hough of San Diego State. Gong/Patel also fell in the seventh-place match.
The Anteaters will return to Aztec Tennis Center on Sunday when they close out the three-day SDSU Fall Invitational.
