Cal Poly Sweeps UC Irvine

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – UC Irvine struggled offensively in a 3-0 (12-25, 13-25, 23-25) loss at Cal Poly Thursday at Mott Gym.

The Anteaters hit .137 (31-18-95) for the match, while the Mustangs hit .422 (47-9-90).

Senior Victoria Dennis led UCI (6-13, 1-4) with nine kills, while senior Shelley Anderson had 22 set assists, five kills, two blocks and a team-high eight digs. Middle blocker Danielle Geiger had seven kills and two blocks.

Cal Poly's Raeann Greisen hit .700 with a team-high 15 kills. Adlee Van Winden added 14 kills and Alexis Clewis had seven kills. Taylor Nelson totaled 41 set assists and eight digs. The Mustangs improved to 9-6 overall and evened its conference record, 2-2.

UCI started slow waiting until they trailed 10-3 to record their first offensive point on a Danielle Geiger kill, 10-4. Coming out of a timeout down 12-4, UCI came to life scoring the next four points which included a block and kills by Victoria Dennis and Shelley Anderson, 12-8. Cal Poly would score 10 of the final 12 points to win 25-12. UCI hit -.071 to Cal Poly's .385.

The Mustangs would score the final eight points of the second game, winning 25-13. The Anteaters continued to struggle, hitting -.029 in the set.

The teams went point for point in the third set until Cal Poly used a pair of kills and an ace to take a 17-15 lead. The Anteaters would tie it up on a Mustang error and a Harlee Kekauoha kill, 18-18. After trading points, Cal Poly had a kill and a UCI attack error to sneak ahead 21-19. The Anteaters hit .484 but ran out of time as Cal Poly won 25-23.

UCI stays on the road, traveling to UC Riverside Saturday (Oct. 8) at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center.
