LA JOLLA, Calif. --- Sophomore Jack Trush scored four goals, but UC Irvine fell to UC San Diego, 7-6, in a back-and-forth, non-conference game at Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla Sunday afternoon.
Trush scored three of this goals in the second half for the 'Eaters (9-9) and junior goalie Matej Matijevic recorded 15 saves in the game.
Bryant Joudrie scored a goal in the first quarter as the teams were tied 1-1 after the opening period.
Trush notched the only goal of the second quarter on a power play to put UCI up 2-1 at halftime.
Ryan Warde connected on a power-play goal with 7:47 left in the third period to extend the Anteaters' margin to 3-1.
The Tritons tied the game on back-to-back goals before Trush lifted UCI to a 4-3 lead on a goal with 2:54 remaining in the third.
Four more goals were scored in the final 1:29 of the third period, three of those by UC San Diego, with Trush adding one for the 'Eaters, who trailed 6-5 entering the final quarter.
Trush scored his fourth goal of the contest on a power play with 5:26 left in the final frame to knot the score at 6-6 before Cooper Milton hit the game-winner for the Tritons with 4:27 remaining.
Milton and Cole Martinez led UC San Diego (12-6) with two goals each.
UCI returns to Golden Coast Conference action Friday night, hosting UC Santa Barbara at 7:00 at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
