MALIBU, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's tennis team concluded action on the second day of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships Friday at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Sophomore Luis Lopez, who won both his matches on Thursday, faced a tough challenge in today's Round of 32 where he was pitted against 10th-seeded Austin Rapp of UCLA. Lopez was unable to pull off the upset as his run in the main draw came to an end with a 6-3, 6-2 setback.
In the consolation bracket, freshman Bruce Man-Son-Hing advanced via a walkover against host Pepperdine's Guilherme Galvao. Sophomore Anil Patel, meanwhile, dropped a hard-fought 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 decision to Pac-12 opponent Michael Guzman (UCLA). Freshman Moritz Geis also went the distance, but suffered a 7-5, 1-6, 10-4 loss to Gregoire Balenci of Grand Canyon. Junior Andrew Gong and freshman Derek Chen each fell 6-4, 6-2 in their respective matches. Sophomore Vatsal Bajpai also came up short against San Diego State's Milen Ianakiev, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
In doubles action, the Anteaters had four teams in the Round of 32. Hansen and Patel couldn't get past the Waves' Tom Hill/Jack Van Slyke (8-4), while Bajpai and Chen were on the wrong end of an 8-3 score against Cal Poly's Garrett Auproux/Timothy Tan. Geis and Gong also fell to the 39th-ranked duo of Benjamin Donovan/Corey Pang (CP), 8-2.
Junior Luca Marquard suffered an injury, forcing him out of the tournament. Marquard withdrew from his consolation singles match and his Round of 32 doubles contest with partner Man-Son-Hing. Also sitting out this weekend with an illness is 79th-ranked Sebastian Heim.
The ITA Southwest Regional Championships will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, in Malibu.
