DAVIS, Calif. --- UC Irvine continued its hot Big West start with a 1-0 victory Thursday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field.
The winner came through in the 50th minute created by Alex Karlowitsch. A couple of athletic moves put her into space along the right side of the box, and her through ball found a streaking Noel Baham to power it into the goal and give UCI (10-4-1, 2-0-1) the 1-0 lead.
The 'Eaters continued its pressure up to that point after building advantages in shots, 5-1, and corners, 5-2, from the first half. The Aggies (5-7-3, 1-2-1) found their chances few and far between with just four shots altogether, and fell to the victorious Anteaters, 1-0.
Maddie Newsom had little work to do as she didn't see a shot on target until the 81st minute. Her two saves helped preserve her eighth shutout on the season and third straight in Big West matches to extend the team's shutout streak to 290 minutes.
UCI powered up 12 shots, five on target, with Alexis Smith getting to four of them in net for the Aggies.
The goal for Baham is No. 4 on the year, and gives her 15 points good for second on the club. Karlowitsch's assist gave her five on the season making her the fourth Anteater with as many as five this year, and matches her single-season high she set as a freshman.
UCI also picks up its tenth win of the season reaching double-digit wins for the first time since 2013. It's also another three points in the Big West race to tie the 'Eaters alongside Long Beach State and CSUN for the time being in second place.
UCI will bring its 2-0-1 conference record back home for its next match on Sunday, Oct. 16 inviting in that CSUN program for a 2:00 p.m. match
