Luca Marquard Drops First Match at ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. – UC Irvine junior Luca Marquard dropped his first match at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships Saturday at Union High School in Tulsa, Okla.

Marquard fell to Western Michigan's Matt Hamilton in the first round of pre-qualifying singles by a score of 6-2, 7-5.

Marquard returns to action tomorrow in a consolation match at 2:30 p.m. (CT).

Junior Sebastian Heim, who is 79th in the ITA Preseason Rankings, is also scheduled to begin competition in the qualifying draw on Monday, Oct. 3.  

The ITA All-American Championships, which features the nation's top Division I men's players, is the first national championship tournament of the 2016-17 season. This is also the first fall competition for both Marquard and Heim.

The rest of the UCI men's tennis team will begin the campaign at the Aztec Fall Invitational in San Diego, Oct. 7-9.
