Hawaii Takes Over Third Quarter To Beat UC Irvine, 59-35

Box Score

Honolulu, Hawaii – The University of Hawaii dominated the third quarter and beat UC Irvine, 59-35 at the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday.

Hawaii (12-9, 5-3) out-scored UCI 23-6 in the third period and 33-18 in second half.

UCI's 35 points was the fewest scored since the Anteaters 2014-15 season opener when they lost 66-35 to Northern Arizona on Nov. 14, 2014.

The free throw line was another key to the Rainbow Wahine win, going 21-25 (84.0%), while UCI was just 8-17 (47.1%) for the game. UH went 10-11 from the line in the third quarter.

UCI (4-18, 1-7) was led by forward Mokun Fajemisin with 11 points and five rebounds. Guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had six points and guard Irene Chavez added five points. Guard Andee Ritter had a team and career-high seven rebounds in the loss.

Hawaii's Megan Huff went 7-10 from the free throw line on her way to a game-high 15 points. Destiny King had eight points and a game-high nine rebounds, while Olivia Crawford, Ashleigh Karaitiana and Marissa Wimbley each added seven points.

Both teams struggled offensively to start the game, ending the first period shooting a combined 15-47 (.319) with UCI holding an 8-6 advantage.

Hawaii would score seven straight and take a 15-12 lead at 4:37 of the second period. The Rainbow Wahine went on to out-score the Anteaters 20-9 in the quarter and hold a 26-17 edge at the half.

UCI's offense stalled in the third period as the Anteaters could only manage four points from Raelyn Cheung-Sutton and two free throws by Mokun Fajemisin in 10 minutes. Hawaii would score the final 12 points of the quarter to pull away, 49-23.

UCI will travel to Cal Poly next Saturday (Jan. 6) at 4:30 p.m. in Mott Gym.
