CSU Bakersfield Runs Past UC Irvine

Bakersfield, Calif. – UC Irvine closed out its non-conference schedule with a 65-39 loss to CSU Bakersfield at the Icardo Center Sunday afternoon.

Raelyn Cheung-Sutton hit a jumper at 6:20 then CSUB peeled off eight straight to build a 16-4 lead at 3:28.  Shereen Suthland broke the scoreless streak with a free throw at 1:01 and Cheung-Sutton had a layup with 49 seconds remaining as the Roadrunners would hold a 21-7 lead at the end of the first period.

UCI out-scored CSUB 8-2 to end the second quarter, but went in to halftime trailing 34-17. Bakersfield would come out of the half hitting two three-pointers and out-score UCI 17-10. UCI once again had a better fourth quarter only being out-scored 14-12.

For the second consecutive game, the Anteater guards led the team offensively. Senior Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had 10 points and three steals followed by her backcourt mate Irene Chavez with eight. Chavez also grabbed five rebounds. Freshman Paulina Santana added four points, while Mckenzie Piper had a team-high six rebounds in 10 minutes of action. Shereen Sutherland, Tayla Jackson and Jenny Dee each pulled down five rebounds.

The Anteaters out-rebounded the Roadrunners 43-39, but didn't capitalize on second chance points. CSUB did capitalize,  scoring 23 points off 19 UCI turnovers. CSUB shot 40.4% from the floor (23-57), while UCI went 16-60 (26.7%). The Anteaters struggled from long range, going 1-14 and the Roadrunners knocked down 8-22.

CSUB was led by Dajy Vines with 14 points and six rebounds. Alyssa Shannon and Brittany Sims each recorded 10 points. Erika Williams had nine points and Batabe Zempare and Addi Walters each recorded eight points in the win.

UC Irvine will open Big West action Thursday (Jan. 7) at UC Riverside. Tip-off is 5:00 p.m.
