WACO, Tex. --- UC Irvine gave No. 4 Baylor a fight to begin the ITA Kickoff Classic before falling 4-1 Saturday morning in Waco, Tex.
The Bears (1-0) rolled through doubles with a sweep. Sebastian Heim and Nico Mertens at No. 3 doubles nearly snagged a set, but it was abandoned at 5-2.
Singles began well for UC Irvine (4-2) with a sweep at No. 6 for Vatsal Bajpai to tie the match at 1-1. The Bears returned with sweeps at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 singles to clinch the match, 4-1.
Heim took the first set at No. 1 singles before his match was abandoned. Mertens held his own taking No. 59 Max Tchoutakian to a tiebreaker in the opening set.
UCI has one more match in Waco on Sun. Jan. 24. They will await the opponent for the match at 10:00 a.m.
