SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The Anteaters returned to the courts two months after their last dual match greeted by No. 22 San Diego to a 4-1 defeat Saturday afternoon.
The Toreros (1-0) rallied after dropping the first doubles set to take the doubles point for an early 1-0 lead.
UC Irvine (3-1) promptly tied the match at 1-1 when No. 119 Sebastian Heim turned in a stunning straight-set upset of No. 35 Uros Petronijevic, 6-2, 6-2.
USD pulled away with the final three points including a three-set battle between No. 34 Jordan Angus and Nico Mertens that fell to the Toreros and seal the match, 4-1.
Tyler Pham and freshman Vatsal Bajpai each had to abandon their three-set singles match as the final point fell.
UCI is back on the court on Sunday, January 17, with 12:00 p.m. match in Anteater Tennis Stadium against Division II stalwart, UC San Diego.
