Box Score DALLAS, Tex. --- UC Irvine had the advantage on the stat sheet, but fell short where it mattered with a 2-0 defeat to SMU Sunday night in Dallas.
UCI (1-4-2) got off to a hot start with seven shots in the first 20 minutes and six first half corners, but it was SMU (4-4-2) who started the scoring off in the 40th minute.
Mauro Cichero's sharp cross found Emil Cuello in the box who would finish it heading home the opening strike.
The Mustangs held the one-goal lead at the half while putting six of their seven shots on frame.
The Anteaters kept coming with plenty of action in the box and a couple more shots on target, but SMU made their one shot on goal count.
Cuello was back on the scene teaming up with Jordan Cano to deliver a ball to Christian Boorom who finished from short-range in the 62nd minute.
UCI's 13-9 shot advantage and nine corners went for naught as it fell for the second time on the road trip to go to 1-4-2 on the year.
Keeper Michael Breslin made five stops on the evening, all in the first half, giving him 35 on the season now.
Eduardo Calzada had four shots to lead all players putting three of them on target.
The Anteaters will now return to the area against a pair of ranked squads starting with No. 17 LMU in Anteater Stadium on Thurs. Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m.
