Anteaters Upended in 109th Minute at Oral Roberts

Box Score

TULSA, Okla. --- Case Soccer Complex was the site for a hectic men's soccer match Thursday night ended by a penalty kick in the 109th minute to lift Oral Roberts over the 'Eaters, 2-1.

UC Irvine (1-3-2) was called for a foul in the box setting up the PK attempt. The foul came on the heels of a free kick attempt from the right wing following a straight red card issued to senior Gerardo Gonzalez. Matthew Rogers roofed a shot into the upper right corner to seal the win for Oral Roberts (2-3-1).

The Anteaters got to overtime thanks to a timely strike from freshman Ivan Canales. A bounding ball in the box fell to Canales who got a little help deflecting the ball into the net to equalize in the 85th minute, 1-1.

ORU put up 25 shots on the night, a new record allowed by the program, which included a goal in the 50th minute from Alexis Derennes, one of his nine shots on the night.

The teams combined for 39 shots and put 17 of them on target. Senior Michael Breslin stopped nine of them, two short of his career high that he set as a freshman. The Golden Eagles' Ben Lacourse stopped seven of his own.

Canales now has two of the 'Eaters' three goals on the season, both have come unassisted.

All three cards issued to the Anteaters came in the final two minutes of the match. They also matched their foul count from the first three periods with six in the second overtime.

UCI can get back on the right track on Sunday, Sept. 20, with a 5:00 p.m. match at SMU, a team that improved to 3-2-2 following a 3-1 win over Houston Baptist.
