David Kim Leads UC Irvine at Cowboy Classic

 

CHANDLER, Ariz. --- Freshman David Kim led UC Irvine in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic that concluded Tuesday at Whirlwind Golf Club (Cattail Course) in Chandler, Ariz.

Kim shot a final round of 2-under par 70 to place sixth in the tournament with a 54-hole total of 7-under 209.

Junior Jacob Schulze, who shot a 1-under 71 Tuesday, finished 13th at 5-under 211 while senior Pete Fernandez was 22nd at 3-under 213 after an even-par 72 in the final round.

Sophomore Bryan Shin shot 77 and finished 79th at 225, and freshman Jonathan Young (78) placed 86th at 228.

There was a three-way tie for first at 9-under 207 with Weber State's Devon Purser winning a one-hole playoff against Robert MacIntyre of McNeese State and Idaho's Jared du Toit.

UCI finished ninth in the team results with a three-round score of 858.  McNeese State won the title at 838, Idaho was second at 840 and Colorado third at 842.

Coach Paul Smolinski's 'Eaters return to action this weekend in the 69th annual Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz. 

Thirty-six holes are scheduled for Saturday with the final round Sunday.  The tournament field includes nine teams ranked in the nation's top 30.
