UCI in the Hunt at Big West Championship

 

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- UC Irvine is tied for third place after Sunday's opening round of the Big West Conference Championship at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.

The 'Eaters and Cal Poly are tied at 289, just three shots behind first-place UC Riverside (286) and one behind UC Davis (288).

Junior Jacob Schulze led UCI Sunday with a 71 on the par-70 course that has him in fourth place.

Freshman David Kim is in fifth at 72, senior Pete Fernandez and sophomore Bryan Shin are tied for 11th place after shooting rounds of 73, and freshman Jonathan Young is 36th after a 78 in the first round.

Only two players shot under par Sunday: UC Riverside's David Gazzolo with a 3-under 67 and Mike Brockington of UC Davis with a 2-under 68.

The second round is scheduled for Monday with the final round on Tuesday.

UCI is grouped with UC Davis and Cal Poly Monday, going off the first tee beginning at 10:40 a.m.
