Box Score Irvine, Calif. – UC Irvine closed out the regular season on a winning note, defeating UC Davis 71-62 at the Bren Center Saturday.
The Anteaters, winners of three of the last four games, are 8-23 overall and 5-11 in the Big West.
UCI will be the No. 8 seed at the Big West Tournament and will face the fifth-seed UC Davis (13-15, 8-8) again on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in Titan Gym.
Junior guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton led UCI with 17 points, hitting 5-8 from the floor, including 3-4 from three. She scored 12 of her points in the second half and also fired a game-high seven assists.
Senior Methlyn Onogomuho played all 40 minutes and went 7-9 from the field, totaling 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Madison McKenney had eight points, three assists and two steals in 26 minutes of action. It was McKenney's most points and minutes played since she scored 11 points in 28 minutes at UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 29.
Forward Brittany Glassow came off the bench to add 10 points and four rebounds, while forward Mokun Fajemisin had eight points and Shereen Sutherland totaled six points and six rebounds.
The Anteaters shot 53.8 percent (14-26) from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting 48.3 percent (29-60). UCI was 9-12 from the line and 4-9 from long range. UC Davis went 22-51 from the floor, hitting 5-19 from beyond the arc and 13-20 from the free throw line.
UC Davis' Alison Doherty dominated down low and had a game-high 27 points. She was 8-14 from the field and 11-15 from the line. Celia Marfine recorded nine points and nine rebounds, while Brianna Salvatore and Dani Nafekh had seven points each.
A three-pointer by Raelyn Cheung-Sutton ignited a a 13-0 run by UCi to take a 19-9 lead with 12:47 to play in the first half. The Anteaters would lead by as many as 11 and take a 33-24 advantage in to the break.
UCI's Realyn Cheung-Sutton open the second half with a three-pointer before the Aggies turned up the heat, out-scoring UCI 18-6 to tie the game at 42-42 on a Kelsey Harris three-pointer at 14:24. Alyson Doherty hit a jumper at 10:16 to give UC Davis the lead, 48-46. The teams would be tied for the seventh time at 55 all then UCI scored eight unanswered, four from Brittany Glassow, to open a 63-55 gap with 2:05 to play. Another three-pointer by Harris narrowed the margin to 68-62 with 27 seconds remaining, but that would be the last time the Aggies would score as UCI would hit three of four free throws to close out the game.
