INDIAN WELLS, Calif. --- The No. 75 Anteaters filled in on the final day of the Oracle Collegiate Challenge out at Indian Wells Tennis Garden with a 4-2 win over Purdue Sunday afternoon.
The teams battled in singles first with each taking two points in sweeps leaving the match at a 2-2 tie early with UC Irvine (16-9, 1-0) winning at Nos. 1 and 3 singles while Purdue (4-10) took Nos. 2 and 5 singles.
Nos. 4 and 6 singles went to a third set to decide things, and both 'Eaters came up big. Jonathan Poon rebounded from an opening-set loss to regain the lead for the Anteaters, 3-2, and Shuhei Shibahara halted Arthur Dobradin's momentum to take the decisive set, 7-5, and clinch the match, 4-2.
UCI rolls its win streak to 10 straight, and now holds a 2-1 mark at neutral sites.
The 'Eaters will observe their spring break before returning on April 1 for no laughing matter; a doubleheader starting at Anteater Tennis Stadium at 10:00 a.m. vs. Fresno State before trekking to UC Riverside for a 3:30 p.m. match.
