CSUN Runs Past UC Irvine, 82-60

Northridge, Calif. -- CSUN ran past UC Irvine 82-60 at the Matadome Saturday afternoon.

UCI (5-22, 2-10) was led by freshman Tierra Hicks with a career-high 16 points and personal best seven rebounds. The guard scored 14 of her 16 points in the final six minutes of the ballgame, including two three pointers.  Sophomore Shereen Sutherland added 12 points, sophomore Mokun Fajmeisin recorded seven points, a game-high nine rebounds and three blocks and sophomore Ashley Merrill had six points. Guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton fired a game-high eight assists to go with six points.

The Matadors (18-9, 8-5) had five players in double-digit scoring led by Ashlee Guay's 18 points.Janae Sharpe (13), Tessa Boagni (12), Cinnamon Lister (10) and Camille Mahlknecht (10) followed.

The score was tied at 10-10 before CSUN scored 13 in a row to open a 23-10 advantage at 10:59. The Anteaters used an Irene Chavez three-pointer and a Brittany Glassow layup to close within 32-21 at 7:30, but the Matadors would go on a 10-1 run to bring the margin back to 42-22 at 5:08. A Katelin King three-pointer with 13 seconds on the clock gave the Matadors their largest lead, 49-26, at the half.

Shereen Sutherland scored the first basket of the half then CSUN would score nine unanswered to open the gap to 58-28 (16:55). With 6:05 remaining, Hicks began her scoring barrage, scoring 14 of UCI's final 22 points. Hicks hit a three-pointers with 20 seconds remaining to end the scoring.

The Anteaters return to host UC San Barbara Thursday (Feb. 26) at 7:00 p.m. at the Bren Events Center in an important game for Big West standings.
