UC Irvine Stung By Sacramento State, 126-78

Box Score

Sacramento, Calif. – Sacramento State set a school record for points with a 126-78 victory over UC Irvine at The Nest Tuesday.

It was the most points allowed by an Anteater team, surpassing the old record of 114 scored by Long Beach State in 1990. It was the first time UCI has allowed 100 points since Bakersfield won 104-92 in 2011. The 48-point loss was the largest margin of defeat since Arizona State topped the Anteaters by 52 (75-23) on Dec. 6, 2008.

The Anteaters (3-9) were led by forward Chloe Kellum's career-high 16 points off the bench. Kellum went 7-9 from the floor and grabbed four rebounds in 12 minutes of action. Forward Mokun Fajemisin added 12 points , five rebounds and three blocks. Irene Chavez recorded nine points, while Mckenzie Piper had eight points and five rebounds.

Sacramento State (3-7) had six players in double-figures led by Brianna Burgos with 23 points, hitting five three-pointers. Gretchen Harrigan totaled 20 points followed by Adelia Randle-El (18), Maranne Johnson (15), Ashlyn Crenshaw (14) and Abbey Goodsell (11).

The Hornets were 44-90 (48.9%) from the floor and 21-28 from the line (75%).  Sac State went 17-51 from three-point range. UCI shot 50 percent from the field (34-68), but had a season-high 38 turnovers.

After a Shreen Suterland layup at 8:07, Sacramento State scored 19 straight to break open a 24-4 advantage with 4:50 remaining in the first quarter. A Mokun Fajemisin layup was followed by a pair of Jenny Dee free throws at 4:16 to bring the margin to 24-8 and that would be the closest the Anteaters would get the rest of the game. The Hornets would out-score UCI 33-14 in the first period with the Anteaters only being out-scored 18-17 in the second to trail 51-31 at halftime.

UCI remains on the road, traveling to USC on Dec. 28 at 7:00 p.m. at the Galen Center.
