Box Score 2 San Jose, Calif. – San Jose State defeated UC Irvine 79-58 at The Events Center Sunday afternoon.
UC Irvine (3-8) was led by juniors Mokun Fajemisin and Irene Chavez with 10 points each. Freshman Tayla Jackson pulled down a game and career-high 11 rebounds and Raelyn Chueng-Sutton had a game-best nine assists. Mckenzie Piper added nine points, while Paulina Santana had seven points.
The Spartans (2-8) were led by Dezz Ramos with 20 points, shooting 8-13 from the floor. Jasmine Smith and Nyre Harris recorded 14 points and Emily Vann and Riana Byrd both came off the bench to score 11 points each.
UCI out-rebounded SJSU, 44-42, but watched the Spartans score 21 points off of 14 turnovers.
San Jose State used a 16-1 run which spanned the first two quarters and over six minutes to open a 25-14 lead. Brittany Glassow put back a rebound to end the drought at 7:12 of the second quarter. The Spartans had a 12-point advantage (28-16) at 6:43 before the Anteaters closed out the half on an 11-5 spurt to go in to the break trailing 34-27.
The Spartans jumped out quickly in the third period, knocking down three three-pointers and out-scoring UCI 15-4 to stretch the lead to 49-31 at 5:38. UCI could only get as close as 14 points the rest of the way.
The Anteaters will travel to Sacramento State Tuesday (Dec.22) for a 2:00 p.m. game.
