UC Irvine Cruises Past San Diego Christian

Irvine, Calif. -- UC Irvine won its second straight game with 78-49 victory over San Diego Christian at the Bren Events Center Saturday afternoon.
The 29-point win is the largest margin of victory since UCI beat La Verne, 90-53 on Jan. 2, 2014. The Anteaters' 78 points are a season-high as was the team's 48.5 shooting percentage (33-68) and 17 assists. The 48 rebounds are the second most this year.
UCI (3-5) was led by forward Shereen Sutherland who tied her season-high with 17 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds. Mckenzie Piper and Teirra Hicks each had 11 points with Piper matching Sutherland's nine rebounds. Guard Irene Chavez added 10 points, while guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton totaled seven points and five assists.
San Diego Christian (5-4) was paced by Saskia Giesselbach's 14 points on 6-7 shooting from the floor. Whitney Braeutigam recorded 10 points and two blocks.
After San Diego Christian hit the first basket of the game, UCI scored 15 of the next 16 points to open a 15-4 advantage with 2:31 to play in the first period. Raelyn Cheung-Sutton would hit a pair of free throws to end the quarter with UCI holding the 22-12 lead.
A 16-4 spurt to close out the first half gave UCI a 42-20 cushion at the intermission. Irene Chavez had eight of her 10 first half points in that UCI run.
Mckenzie Piper recorded seven points and four rebounds in the third period to help UCI to a 60-34 lead then Teirra Hicks took over the final quarter with nine points and three steals..
UCI will be back in action hosting Grand Canyon Monday (Dec. 14) at 7:00 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.
