LMU Pounces On UC Irvine In Second Half

Los Angeles, Calif. -- Loyola Marmount out-scored UC Irvine 60-20 in the second half on the way to a 95-50 victory over the Anteaters in the consolation of the LMU Thanksgiving Classic at Gersten Pavilion.

UCI (1-3) was led by senior guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton with 13 points, five assists and two steals. Guard Irene Chavez added eight points, while forwards Mckenzie Piper and Mokun Fajemisin each had seven points. Fajemisin grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Lions dominated the glass, out-rebounding UCI 55-36. The Anteaters shot 23.9 percent (10-32) from the field, while LMU was 35-68 from the floor (51.5%). UCI shot well from the free throw line, knocking down 14-16.

Cheyenne Wallace had a game-high 23 points for Loyola Marymount. The LMU bench contributed 55 points with 22 points and 13 rebounds coming from Sophie Taylor and 11 points from Deanna Johnson. Bree Alford added 12 rebounds and nine points.

The host Lions (2-4) jumped out early, scoring the first 10 points of the game and taking a 14-8 lead after the first quarter.

UCI's Raelyn Cheung Sutton took over the second quarter, recording 11 points, including eight in a 10-3 run that closed the deficit to 23-20 at 5:32. Cheung-Sutton hit another jumper at 1:26 to close within 31-30, but LMU would end the half with the final four points and a 35-30 lead.

A pair of Irene Chavez free throws at 4:58 of the third quarter put UCI behind by just five points (44-39) before the Lions scored 14 straight points, including three consecutive three-pointers to open a 58-39 gap at 1:20.

After leading by 20 at the end of the third period, the final quarter was all LMU as the Lions racked up 34 points to the Anteaters' 9.

UCI will play the next four games at home starting with Northern Arizona Friday (Dec. 4) at 7:00 p.m. in the Bren Events Center.
