Box Score San Luis Obispo, Calif. -- UC Irvine's Mokun Fajemisin posted her fifth double-double of the year, but the Anteaters lost to Cal Poly 74-58 at Mott Gym Saturday.
UCI goes to 4-18 on the year and 1-6 in the Big West, while Cal Poly is 11-9 overall and a league-leading 6-2 in the Big West.
It was Fajemisin's second consecutive double-double with a game-high 18 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. The forward went 7-12 from the floor and 4-5 from the line.
Shereen Sutherland had 13 points and five rebounds, while Methlyn Onogomuho and Madison McKenney followed with seven points each. Guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton tied her career-high with nine assists.
The Anteaters shot 35.3 percent (24-68) from the floor and struggled again from the free throw line, going 9-19 (.474).
Cal Poly drained eight three-pointers to UCI's one and out-rebounded the Anteaters 55-46.
The Mustangs were led by Hannah Gilbert and Kristen Ale with 14 point apiece. Gilbert also had a team-best eight rebounds. Cal Poly shot 45.9 percent (17-37) from the floor in the second half and 39.2 percent (31-79) overall.
Cal Poly went on a 13-5 spurt, which included three three-pointers to open a 17-9 lead with 10:18 to play in the first half. Lay ups by Mokun Fajemisin and Irene Chevez put the Anteaters within six (28-22) at 2:49, but Cal Poly would score the next eight points, six of which came from Dynn Leaupepe to push the gap to36-24 with 19 seconds. Just like Thursday, Madison McKenney, knocked down a three just before the half ended to give Cal Poly 36-27 lead at the break.
The Mustangs would come out of the locker room and out-score the Anteaters 8-2 to hold a 44-29 lead and the Anteaters would only get as close as 14 points the rest of the game.
UCI returns home to battle Long Beach State Thursday (Feb. 5) at 4:00 p.m. in the first game of a double-header with the UCI men's team.,
