Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine found itself in a familiar spot, regaining the lead late to vanquish a ranked foe as it turned away No. 25 Clemson's advances with a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon on the SDSU Sports Deck to wrap up the Courtyard Marriott SD Central Soccer Tournament.
The teams played an even first half getting six shots apiece with the exception of Noah Gaines' 37th-minute goal, the first of his Anteater career, to set the 'Eaters up, 1-0, through 45 minutes.
UCI (3-0-0) started to separate from the Tigers early with a number of scoring opportunities, but Clemson (1-3-0) took advantage of its chance tying the match up in the 68th minute thanks to T.J. Casner.
UC Irvine revisited its Friday match and answered quickly, this time just four minutes later as Dennis Martinez knocked home the eventual game-winner in the 72nd minute after Lester Hayes III's initial shot was stopped by keeper Chris Glodack.
The 'Eaters finished with an 18-10 shot advantage including 11 shots on target despite allowing eight more corner kicks than they earned. Glodack was up to the task stopping nine shots. Michael Breslin needed to stop just one shot.
Martinez's goal was the third of his career and his second game-winner. Gaines got an assist from Gor Kirakosyan. Cameron Iwasa direct four of his five shots on the match on goal.
Mats Bjurman was named Defensive MVP of the tournament for the weekend. Iwasa, Martinez, and Eduardo Calzada joined him on the all-tournament team.
Next up for UCI is a trip to the east coast to take on West Virginia on Thursday, Sept. 11 for a 4:00 p.m. match.
