UC Irvine Finishes 3rd at Nick Watney Invitational

 

FRESNO, Calif. --- UC Irvine tied for third in the Nick Watney Invitational that concluded Tuesday at Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno.

The Anteaters, along with Cal Poly and Santa Clara, finished with three-round totals of 860.  Pacific won the tournament with a score of 838 and host Fresno State was second at 858.

UCI senior Pete Fernandez shot a final round of even-par 72 and placed seventh with a 54-hole total of 5-under par 211 in the Anteaters' first tournament of the season.

Junior Jacob Schulze, with a 71 Tuesday, finished 11th at 214 and sophomore Bryan Shin, who shot 74, was 19th at 217.

Freshman David Kim (72) finished 26th at 219 and senior Bhuvan Potluri (79) was 53rd at 227.  Anteater freshman Jonathan Young, competing as an individual, shot a 73 in the last round and placed 26th at 219.

Byron Meth from Pacific was the tournament medalist at 10-under 206 after shooting a 71 Tuesday.

Coach Paul Smolinski's UCI squad is back in action this weekend, competing in the Southern Dunes Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the University of Wyoming, at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz., Saturday and Sunday.
