IRVINE, Calif. --- Head coach Paul Smolinski welcomes the return of five players plus the addition of four freshmen as the UC Irvine men's golf team prepares to open the 2014-15 season.
Smolinski, in his 17th season at UCI, will guide the 'Eaters through four tournaments in the fall to start the season.
UCI competes at the Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno Sept. 29-30, followed by the Southern Dunes Collegiate Invitational in Maricopa, Ariz., the Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club and the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in Hawaii.
Following a traditional break in the schedule, the 'Eaters resume action Feb. 9-10 in the Barona Collegiate Cup at Barona Creek Golf Club.
UCI then competes in the Jones Invitational at Valencia Country Club, the Del Walker Intercollegiate at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, the Cal Poly Match Play Championship at Cypress Ridge Golf Club in Arroyo Grande, the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and the 69th Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz.
The Big West Conference Championship moves to the San Luis Obispo Country Club this season.
NCAA Regional play is May 14-16 at six different sites across the nation. The NCAA Championship is at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., May 29-June 3.
Anteater senior Pete Fernandez was an All-Big West first team selection last season when he led the 'Eaters with a 73.06 average and six top-10 finishes.
Also returning for UCI this season are senior Bhuvan Potluri, junior Jacob Schulze, and sophomores Ryan O'Connor and Bryan Shin.
"This is the first time I can remember that we have five returning players who all have some experience competing at this level," Smolinski said.
