IRVINE, Calif. --- Head coach Paula Weishoff and the UC Irvine women's volleyball team will travel to unfamiliar territory in 2014, meeting six new opponents along the way during the non-conference portion of the schedule.
UCI opens the season by traveling to Cincinnati to compete in the Queen City Classic. UCI takes on Xavier (Aug. 29) to kick off tournament action. The team then meets the host Bearcats and Duquesne, an NCAA Tournament qualifier, both for the first time on Aug. 30.
The Anteaters host the UC Irvine Tournament at Crawford Court, Sept. 5-6, with Utah State, Pepperdine and Idaho completing the four-team field. UCI takes on Idaho in the home opener (Sept. 5) in an afternoon contest and then faces off against Pepperdine to close out a pair of evening matches. The tournament ends Saturday (Sept. 6) against Utah State and Army will march into Crawford Court for a single match against the Anteaters Sunday (Sept. 7).
UCI hits the road on consecutive weekends, traveling first to Albuquerque, New Mexico to tackle first-time opponent, Bethune-Cookman, with Montana State and New Mexico to follow at the Lobo Classic (Sept. 12-13). After a single match at Eastern Michigan (Sept. 18), the Anteaters depart to Rochester, Mich., for the Golden Grizzly Invite. There, UCI will meet Robert Morris (Sept. 19) and Bowling Green (Sept. 20) for the teams' first meetings before concluding against host Oakland University (Sept. 20).
Big West Conference action opens at the Bren Center for the Anteaters, who will meet Black and Blue rival, Long Beach State (Sept. 26), and Cal State Northridge (Sept. 27).
UCI then faces three consecutive NCAA Tournament teams when the Anteaters travel to Hawai'i (Oct. 4) before returning to the Bren Center to take on UC Santa Barbara (Oct. 10) and Cal State Northridge (Oct. 11).
The Big West schedule continues with a trip to UC Riverside (Oct. 17) and a home match against UC Davis (Oct. 18).
Orange County rivalries will be renewed against Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 24) before the Anteaters break from conference play with a rare Monday night match at San Diego State (Oct. 27).
A Halloween match-up pits UCI against Hawai'i in the Bren Center (Oct. 31) to start the second-round of conference contests.
The Anteaters dive into the month of November at Cal Poly (Nov. 7) and UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 8) before honoring their seniors in the final home match of the year against UC Riverside (Nov. 13).
UCI caps the regular season on the road with four straight, beginning at UC Davis (Nov. 15). The Anteaters make the short trip to Cal State Fullerton (Nov. 22) before traveling to Long Beach State (Nov. 28) and Cal State Northridge (Nov. 29) to end the regular season.
Weishoff and her coaching staff of Aaron Flores and Tyler Hagstrom have 13 players returning from the 2013 roster.
The team is led by three All-Big West Conference selections. Marisa Bubica was an honorable mention honoree after pacing the team with a 3.00 kill average and Cassidy Pickrell and Shelley Anderson were both Freshman Team choices.
