SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- Starting pitchers Elliot Surrey and Justin Calomeni made it another pitchers' duel but this time No. 16 UC Irvine would come out on the wrong end, losing 1-0 to fifth-ranked Cal Poly Saturday at Baggett Stadium. The loss snapped a nine-game win streak by the 'Eaters, who dropped to 34-15 and 15-2 in the Big West.
Surrey had a runner reach against him in every inning through five but managed to keep the Mustangs off the scoreboard until he surrendered a single run in the sixth. The lefty gave up a leadoff double to Nick Torres and Jimmy Allen came up with a clean two-out hit through the left side to drive in the deciding run. Surrey would go on to deal a scoreless seventh and eighth but suffered the hard-luck loss to fall to 6-3.
Calomeni pitched six innings, striking out six and held the Anteaters to just two hits to improve 8-2 overall. UCI had just one baserunner reach second against the right-hander after Mikey Duarte took first on an error by John Schuknecht and reached second on a single to third by Grant Palmer. That would be all for the Anteaters. Evan Cassolato singled with one out in the fifth but was caught in a rundown and the Mustang staff retired the final 13 batters. Taylor Chris logged a shutout eighth and Reid Reilly retired the side in the ninth to post his ninth save.
First pitch of the series finale is slated for 1:00 p.m.
