IRVINE, Calif. --- UCI men's tennis put in a strong effort despite the 4-0 final score, but its Big West Tournament run was cut short Thursday morning at the hands of UC Davis in Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The 'Eaters (11-18, 1-4) held the advantage in doubles up until the tiebreakers when the Aggies stormed back to win 8-7 at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles for the initial point.
Singles started off slow with losses in five of the six opening sets. Rafael Davidian won the tiebreaker to take his opening set, but straight-set losses by Jonathan Hammel and Shuhei Shibahara put the Anteaters in a 3-0 hole.
Second set wins from Tyler Pham, Caryl Hernandez and Ryan Cheung looked to put the pressure on, but Pham would eventually fall in his third set giving UC Davis (14-10, 2-3) the fourth point it needed.
UCI finishes 2014 at 11-18 overall, 1-4 in Big West play for a fifth-place finish.
