No. 7 Stanford Shuts Out No. 9 UC Irvine, 3-0

Stanford, Calif. – No. 7 Stanford swept No. 9 UC Irvine, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) at Maples Pavilion Saturday.

UC Irvine (7-7, 4-6) was led by opposite Zack La Cavera with nine kills. Middle blocker Scott Kevorken had eight kills and a team-best two blocks, while outside hitter Connor Hughes and middle blocker Collin Mehring each had six kills. Outside hitter Jeremy Dejno pitched in five kills. Libero Michael Brinkley had a match-high 13 digs and setter Roberto Frazzoni totaled 32 set assists and four digs.

Steven Irvin had a match-high 14 kills for Stanford (7-4, 4-4), while hitting .522. Eric Mochalski recorded 12 kills, hitting .526 and collecting seven digs. 

In the first set, back-to-back kills by Steven Irvin and an Anteater attack error gave Stanford the 8-5 lead. Two more Irvin kills and a Cardinal ace pushed the Stanford lead to 16-11. UCI hit .435, but Stanford would hit .522 and win the set 25-20.

UCI was up 9-6 in the second set before three straight Anteater attack errors tied the set at 9-9. Kills by Kevorken and Hughes gave UCI the 16-13 advantage, but the Cardinal came back to tie it at 17 all. With the score tied at 20-20, Stanford closed out the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-21.

Stanford would score seven in a row to take a 13-7 lead in the third and go on to a 25-19 victory to end the match.

UCI returns home to host USC Thursday (Feb. 13) and Pepperdine Friday (Feb. 14). Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Bren Center.
